Some General Observations Empty Some General Observations

Post by Dmanrlz2 Thu Jul 28, 2011 7:53 pm

Firstly how are we going to negotiate the necessities that we will need sooner or later? For instance Shampoo, Soap, and toothpaste? These are all things that we will need.
Secondly As for creating cheap and efficient houses; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cob_%28material%29
You can make a full house in about a day if people work together as a community, I think this would be the way to go for insulation and the like. The walls can be made to 3 ft thick or more if needed and the cob is 100% fireproof.

That would require currency within the town.
We need the town to buy essentials and give it to us.

Some General Observations Empty Re: Some General Observations

Post by anon Fri Jul 29, 2011 9:42 pm

I think weekly/monthly shipments every summer, and before the winter, one huge massive shipment before the first snow.

Look, being in the town does not mean you live in a foreign country. People will be needing jobs and needing to get paid.

We can all find ways to make money.

I know we're not going to exactly have a perfect system going, for a while it will be a "work for your room and board" situation. But we can figure out where the money will come from, hopepfully sooner rather than later.

Some General Observations Empty going back to the Cob idea

Post by debretoman Fri Jul 29, 2011 9:47 pm

I think the Cob idea is a great idea, we could apply for grants and stuff because of sustainable building techniques.
As Wikipedia states: "Cobtun House was built in 2001 and won the Royal Institute of British Architects' Sustainable Building of the Year award in 2005"

regarding the issue of jobs, Rapid city is 45 minutes away, so for those of you with applicable real world skills, it might be possible to get a job there. just not sure if the pay would be worth the commute.

does anybody know what the cost of living is respective to the national average?

also, my mom is one of those coupon addicts, and is constantly buying said necessities. I've already begun hoarding them. i realize what i bring wont be enough to supply the whole town, but it will help those who forgot to pack some, run out, or whatever else may happen. i already have 3 bottles of body wash.

I'm hoping there's a possibility of some of us having skills that enable telecommuting.

If enough folks found jobs in Rapid City, we could organize carpools. That would help on the cost of gas, at the very least.

If the median income of rapid city is ~20k then we have nothing to worry about. I have made that in a day of work. Buying things in Rapid and reselling them is a good idea.

Making our own soaps and personal hygiene products is a great idea - they are also easy to make.

Medical supplies is the hard one. Those will HAVE to be shipped in. I suggest one of the first things we get going is a working doctors office and vet. Getting the right supplies for both of those is one of the most important things we have to do.
